    E-Pad: Large Display Pointing in a Continuous Interaction Space around a Mobile Device

    International audienceRelative pointing through using tactile mobile device (such as tablets of phones) on a large display is a viable interaction technique (that we call Pad in this paper) which permits accurate pointing. However, limited device size has consequences on interaction. Such systems are known to often require clutching, which degrades performances. We present E-Pad, an indirect relative pointing interaction technique which takes benefit of the mobile tactile surface combined with its surrounding space. A user can perform continuous relative pointing starting on the pad then continuing in the free space around the pad, within arm's reach. As a first step toward E-Pad, we first introduce extended continuous relative pointing gestures and conduct a preliminary study to determine how people move their hand around the mobile device. We then conduct an experiment that compares the performance of E-Pad and Pad. Our findings indicate that E-Pad is faster than Pad and decreases the number of clutches without compromising accuracy. Our findings also suggest an overwhelming preference for E-Pad

    Next-Point Prediction Metrics for Perceived Spatial Errors

    International audienceTouch screens have a delay between user input and corresponding visual interface feedback, called input “latency” (or “lag”). Visual latency is more noticeable during continuous input actions like dragging, so methods to display feedback based on the most likely path for the next few input points have been described in research papers and patents. Designing these “next-point prediction” methods is challenging, and there have been no standard metrics to compare different approaches. We introduce metrics to quantify the probability of 7 spatial error “side-effects” caused by next-point prediction methods. Types of side-effects are derived using a thematic analysis of comments gathered in a 12 participants study covering drawing, dragging, and panning tasks using 5 state-of- the-art next-point predictors. Using experiment logs of actual and predicted input points, we develop quantitative metrics that correlate positively with the frequency of perceived side-effects. These metrics enable practitioners to compare next- point predictors using only input logs

    Interface caligráfica para ecrãs de larga escala

    A utilização de ecrãs de larga escala em sistemas de visualização está a tornar-se comum. No entanto, poucas solucões de interacção tiram realmente partido da área de visualização e do espaço de trabalho. Na maioria dos casos, o seu uso limita-se à visualização de modelos 3D em que o utilizador é espectador e, recorrendo a dispositivos tradicionais como o rato e o teclado, um operador navega pelo modelo. Neste trabalho propomos uma nova abordagem de interacção que utiliza apontadores laser e que permite a um ou mais utilizadores interagir de forma natural com um ecrã de larga escala. Transpondo o conceito de interface caligráfica de aplicações desktop para o ecrã de larga escala, oferecemos um conjunto de metáforas de interacção baseadas em traços e inspiradas na metáfora do lápis e papel. Sobre estes conceitos, apresentamos uma nova interface com o utilizador, baseada em menu circulares com suporte a multi-utilizadores. Apresentamos o protótipo ImmiView que oferece as funcionalidades de navegação, modelação simples e criação de anotações para a área da arquitectura. Finalmente, apresentamos as conclusões baseadas em testes efectuados sobre o protótipo

    The Genetic History of Indigenous Populations of the Peruvian and Bolivian Altiplano: The Legacy of the Uros

    The Altiplano region of the South American Andes is marked by an inhospitable climate to which the autochthonous human populations adapted and then developed great ancient civilizations, such as the Tiwanaku culture and the Inca Empire. Since pre-Columbian times, different rulers established themselves around the Titicaca and Poopo Lakes. By the time of the arrival of Spaniards, Aymara and Quechua languages were predominant on the Altiplano under the rule of the Incas, although the occurrence of other spoken languages, such as Puquina and Uruquilla, suggests the existence of different ethnic groups in this region. In this study, we focused on the pre-Columbian history of the autochthonous Altiplano populations, particularly the Uros ethnic group, which claims to directly descend from the first settlers of the Andes, and some linguists suggest they might otherwise be related to Arawak speaking groups from the Amazon. Using phylogeographic, population structure and spatial genetic analyses of Y-chromosome and mtDNA data, we inferred the genetic relationships among Uros populations (Los Uros from Peru, Uru-Chipaya and Uru-Poopo from Bolivia), and compared their haplotype profiles with eight Aymara, nine Quechua and two Arawak (Machiguenga and Yanesha) speaking populations from Peru and Bolivia. Our results indicated that Uros populations stand out among the Altiplano populations, while appearing more closely related to the Aymara and Quechua from Lake Titicaca and surrounding regions than to the Amazon Arawaks. Moreover, the Uros populations from Peru and Bolivia are genetically differentiated from each other, indicating a high heterogeneity in this ethnic group. Finally, our results support the distinctive ancestry for the Uros populations of Peru and Bolivia, which are likely derived from ancient Andean lineages that were partially replaced during more recent farming expansion events and the establishment of complex civilizations in the Andes

    IMPROVE: Advanced displays and interaction techniques for collaborative design review

    In this paper we present evaluation results of an innovative application designed to make collaborative design review in the architectural and automotive domain more effective. Within IMPROVE, a European research project in the area of advanced displays, we are combining high resolution multi-tile displays, TabletPCs and head-mounted displays with innovative 2D and 3D Interaction Paradigms to better support collaborative mobile mixed reality design reviews. Our research and development is motivated by application scenarios in the automotive domain involving FIAT Elasis from Naples, Italy and in the architectural domain involving Page/Park architects from Glasgow, Scotland. User evaluation took place at Glasgow (UK), Naples (ITA) and Darmstadt (GER), where we tested the integrated IMPROVE prototype application. The tests were conducted based on several heuristics such as ergonomics and psychomotorial factors and they were conducted based on guidelines recommended by ISO 9241 to verify whether the developed interfaces were suitable for the applications scenarios. Evaluation results show that there is a strong demand for more interactive design review systems, allowing users greater flexibility and greater choice of input and visualization modalities as well as their combination

    IMPROVE: collaborative design review in mobile mixed reality

    In this paper we introduce an innovative application designed to make collaborative design review in the architectural and automotive domain more effective. For this purpose we present a system architecture which combines variety of visualization displays such as high resolution multi-tile displays, TabletPCs and head-mounted displays with innovative 2D and 3D Interaction Paradigms to better support collaborative mobile mixed reality design reviews. Our research and development is motivated by two use scenarios: automotive and architectural design review involving real users from Page\Park architects and FIAT Elasis. Our activities are supported by the EU IST project IMPROVE aimed at developing advanced display techniques, fostering activities in the areas of: optical see-through HMD development using unique OLED technology, marker-less optical tracking, mixed reality rendering, image calibration for large tiled displays, collaborative tablet-based and projection wall oriented interaction and stereoscopic video streaming for mobile users. The paper gives an overview of the hardware and software developments within IMPROVE and concludes with results from first user tests
